Sharks, Sea Turtles, and 800,000 Gallons: The Virginia Aquarium's Double Life

Part aquarium, part hospital, part research station — the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center on General Booth Boulevard is the Oceanfront's brain trust, and its stranding team never really clocks out.

Sharks, Sea Turtles, and 800,000 Gallons: The Virginia Aquarium's Double Life (Virginia Beach Oceanfront News)

The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center keeps two buildings and one foot in the ocean. On General Booth Boulevard near the Oceanfront, its main campus runs the big-tank theater visitors expect — a Norfolk Canyon exhibit modeled on the offshore canyon where the continental shelf drops away, sand tiger sharks cruising above the tunnel — while its Marsh Pavilion adds the otters, the aviary, and the hands-on science of Owls Creek.

The institution's second life is the serious one. Its Stranding Response Team is the authorized responder for sea turtles and marine mammals along Virginia's coast — the team that fields the 24-hour hotline when a dolphin strands at Sandbridge or a cold-stunned sea turtle washes in with November's temperature drop. Late fall is in fact the season to know the number: as bay water cools, juvenile sea turtles that lingered too long get trapped by the cold, and the aquarium's rehabilitation tanks do quiet, essential work.

Research and education fill the third shift: boat trips with naturalists, camps, and the scientific work of tracking a changing mid-Atlantic — warming water, shifting species, subtropical visitors turning up in Virginia nets that would have been remarkable a generation ago.

Tourists know it as the rainy-day rescue of every beach vacation. Virginia Beach knows it better: the place where the city's relationship with the Atlantic is studied, treated, and taught — one turtle, one tank, one field trip at a time.
